The latest version of Henry James’ haunted house classic fails to raise a scare Dir: Floria Sigismondi. US. 2020. 94mins Based on Henry James’ monstrous 1898 masterpiece ’The Turn Of The Screw’, The Turning fails to make the most of its source material. James’ chilling story – with its remote estate, new governess, and two odd little children – gave discriminating Gothic fans everything except a definitive answer. Were there really ghosts walking the halls? Or was the neurotic nanny simply coming unwound? The real meaning was as hard to pin down as a wisp of ectoplasm. But instead of intriguing ambiguity, this updated version – which had a long and bumpy development – offers only maddening confusion. The best special-effect here is the house and its furnishings, which add enormous production value. With false endings within false endings, it’s the sort of movie whose final fade-out will leave audiences groaning in frustration. While the involvement of Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard could garner some interest when it opens in the US and UK on January 24, expect smart horror fans to avoid it — and and smarter ones to seek out the definitive version of the tale, Jack Clayton’s old, elegantly elusive The Innocents (1961). With The Turning, Carey Hayes and Chad W. Hayes’ script arbitrarily pulls James’ Victorian chiller kicking and screaming into the grungy ’90s. The film stars Mackenzie Davis as Kate, a punky schoolteacher who’s just taken the job as live-in tutor to a couple of rich orphans. Oddly, although Kate seems to live in New England, her charges reside in what looks like a Royal palace; an extraordinary old estate complete with watchful griffins, dusty oil paintings of 18 th -century relatives, and a forbidding hedge maze. It’s strange, alright – but not quite as strange as the watery apparitions who keep showing up in bathroom mirrors, or the disembodied hand intent on giving Kate an over-friendly hello. Actually, the best special-effect here is the house and its furnishings – the film was shot at Killruddery House, in Ireland’s County Wicklow – which add enormous production value. Although it’s hardly likely that there would be any home quite like this in the United States, that adds to the fairy-tale fantasy (and does get a sort of half-hearted explanation at the end). There are a few sharp supporting performances here, too, including Barbara Marten as a thin-lipped scold of a housekeeper, and Brooklynn Prince ( The Florida Project) as a refreshingly far-from-adorable moppet. But Floria Sigismondi, a mostly music-video director whose last feature was 2010’s The Runaways, seems more interested in dropping in Kurt Cobain references and snatches of moody rock than going deep into the material and building a real sense of suspense. Davis, who begins the film on a note of near hysteria, really has nowhere to take her performance once the shocks begin to build. And when they do come, it’s without much variety. Just how many times can some soggy corpse appear at the bottom of a pool of water? Or a blue-skinned wraith emerge from the shadows? After the third spooky closeup of antique mannequins and porcelain dolls the effect really begins to wear thin. Oh, the spirits are willing, all right. But this film is weak. This article contains major spoilers for the end of The Turning and of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw.  The Turning is going to frustrate you. There's been plenty of debate already amongst the privileged few (we critics) who got to see it early over whether or not Floria Sigismondi's adaptation of Henry James' gothic ghost story sticks the original novella's purposefully ambiguous ending, but one thing's for sure: It's definitely ambiguous. Whether or not it works, that ambiguity is the whole point of the story.  To understand what's going on in The Turning, you've gotta look back at The Turn of the Screw, James' 1898 horror novella that tells the story of a young governess who takes a position at a giant mansion that houses a housekeeper, an orphaned little girl, and her brother who is away at boarding school for part of the story. While living in the house, the governess starts seeing things, which she realizes must be the ghosts of people who used to live there. Coincidentally, the governess before her had a relationship with a former employee of the mansion, and before their deaths they spent a long time with each other and with both of the children. Spiraling, the governess starts to believe that the spirits of her predecessor and the mysterious man are haunting the house, possessing the children in order to continue their relationship.  The book ends with the governess forcing the little girl to say the name of her former teacher, which the governess believes releases the ghost's hold on her. She attempts to "save" the brother in the same way, but he dies in her arms. And then the book ends! There's never any indication whether the governess was right about any of it, whether there were ghosts at all, or if she was sane the whole time. Since its publication, James' novella has become a standard text for exploring themes of female hysteria in horror -- basically, the trope of the woman who seems to know exactly what kind of supernatural shenanigans are going on despite the fact that no one will listen to her. That The Turn of the Screw never outright says whether or not the main character is crazy is part of its appeal.  Recommended Video These Tacos Are Made for Dunking Universal Pictures Which brings us to The Turning, and what director Sigismondi attempts to do to fashion her own ambiguous ending (rather, endings) out of the way she's adapted the story. Early on in the movie, Kate (Mackenzie Davis) says goodbye to her mother (Joely Richardson), who is living in some sort of mental institution, compulsively painting pictures at the bottom of the building's empty swimming pool. This both introduces the mother character for future reference later in the film, and indicates that perhaps there may be some unstable tendencies that the otherwise perfectly normal Kate may have inherited from her family.  Later, after her stint at her governess job living in the mansion has convinced her that spirits are haunting the house and somehow threatening or using the children for their own ends, Kate receives an envelope from her mother of pictures she's painted at her hospital. After looking at them, she has multiple visions of the ghosts, including one that appears to show the man, Quint, raping the former governess Miss Jessel -- a revelation that the woman's ghost seems to have been trying to tell Kate this whole time. Absolutely flipping her lid, Kate gathers the children, Flora (an incredibly great Brooklynn Prince) and Miles ( Stranger Things ' Finn Wolfhard), into her car, and guns it for the mansion's front gate. After a tense moment, it opens, and she drives the children through, and they escape into the night.  Except then, the camera zooms out, revealing the headlights of the car as part of Kate's mother's painterly scribbles as Kate holds them in her hand. We're back in that previous scene as Kate trades barbs with the housekeeper, who suggests that maybe her mother's mental illness may be hereditary. In the next scene, Kate confronts Flora and Miles in Quint's room full of creepshots he's taken of other young women who lived in the house. When she demands that the children tell her they can see the ghosts too, they turn on her, berating her until she curls up in a ball at the bottom of the stairs. Then, in what is possibly the third ending, Kate wakes up in a four-poster bed at the bottom of her mother's pool. She gets up and steps over to her mother, who asks her if she saw her pictures before turning around. When Kate sees her face, she screams. Roll credits.  On one hand I admire Sigismondi's commitment to the creeping, dreadful uncertainty of the source material while trying to do a few new things with it. It's the kind of ambiguity we don't get from mainstream films anymore, especially not horror, now that every movie is theorized about and dissected online within days of its debut, angry fans demanding answers to every moment they deem a "plot hole. " It's a storytelling style deeply rooted in an older tradition that I'm glad is making a little bit of a comeback, if movies like this and 2015's  Crimson Peak and Park Chan-wook's delightfully cruel 2013 film  Stoker are any indication. On the other hand, watching this/these ending/s play out is like watching the movie give up on itself. The viewer is left with a "HUH??? " instead of a "really makes you think, " and it's frustrating to see a film like this set up so many pins and then chicken out of knocking 'em down. On the bright side, I did learn that if your live-in governess job involves playing nice with a kid who seems to be able to find spiders anywhere in his house whenever he wants, it's not worth it.  Need help finding something to watch? It is a modern adaptation of the 1898 ghost story The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. [6] The film stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, Brooklynn Prince, and Joely Richardson, and follows a young governess in the 1990s who is hired to watch over two children after their parents' deaths. The film first entered development in March 2016 and was described as a passion project for Steven Spielberg, who executive produced, wanting to be involved in a horror film again. The adaptation went through two phases of production: first as Haunted with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo attached as director, then as The Turning with Sigismondi. Filming took place at Killruddery House, County Wicklow, Ireland [7] from February through April 2018. The film had its world premiere at Los Angeles Film Festival on January 23, 2020, and was theatrically released in the United States on January 24, 2020 by Universal Pictures. It received generally negative reviews from critics and has grossed over $14 million. Plot [ edit] Miss Jessel, the live-in tutor at the Fairchild Estate, flees the house in a panic. When she reaches the gate, she exits her car to open it and is attacked by a ragged looking man. Some time later, Kate Mandell is leaving her job as a teacher to become a governess for the seven year old Flora Fairchild after Miss Jessel's disappearance. Before leaving she visits her mother, who lives in a mental institution because she suffers from delusions. Upon arriving at the Fairchild Estate, Kate is informed by the caretaker Mrs. Grose that Flora witnessed her parents die in a car accident outside the house's gate and is a "special case. " Kate meets Flora who gives her a tour of the grounds, and confesses that she is afraid Kate will leave her without saying goodbye like Miss Jessel did, but Kate promises not to. That night, Kate investigates a disturbance in the East Wing, which Flora refused to show her earlier. There she encounters Flora's brother Miles, who is back from boarding school. Despite avoiding the subject as to why he has returned, the following day Kate receives a call from the school's principal who informs her that Miles is expelled after being found strangling another boy. This startles Kate, who only becomes more aggravated with him when he and Flora begin pulling pranks on her. She lashes out at Miles, but later apologizes. Miles suggests he teach her how to ride horses to make it up to her, as their former riding instructor Quint had recently died. Kate starts to notice strange occurrences happening at night, so she begins to keep her lights on when she goes to sleep. One day she suggests they go into town, to the dismay of both Flora and Mrs. Grose. Miles convinces Flora to go, but she throws a fit outside the gate and proceeds to run out of the car after Kate refuses to stop it. Miles warns her that keeping the lights on won't keep her safe and warns her to leave before going after Flora. However, Kate decides to stay due to her promise to Flora. After reconciling with both Flora and Miles, they play flashlight tag in the house. While looking for Miles in the basement, Kate is attacked by the ghost of Miss Jessel and has her flashlight taken away after she drops it. Kate finds Miss Jessel's journal which contains increasingly frightening entries about how Quint was obsessed with her, wouldn't leave her alone, and even took pictures of her while she slept. When Kate enquires about it, Mrs. Grose says tells her that Quint died a couple weeks following Miss Jessel's departure when he fell from his horse while riding drunk. Kate is frightened by this information and the journal entries, and continues to see Quint and Miss Jessel's apparent ghosts around the house, making her increasingly paranoid. Kate receives art from her mother in the mail, and Mrs. Grose comments that it's lucky her mother's condition "isn't genetic. " She is led by wet footprints and Miss Jessel's ghost to discover her dead body in a pond on the house grounds. Kate also has a vision of Quint raping and strangling Miss Jessel upon returning to the house. She tells Mrs. Grose, who appears to have already known about it and assures Kate that she made sure that Quint died. Quint's ghost appears and pushes Mrs. Grose over the stair bannister, killing her. Kate gathers the children and takes them away in her car. The following sequence [ clarification needed] is revealed to have been a vision Kate had while looking at her mother's art and Mrs. Grose saying it's lucky her mother's condition "isn't genetic. " Kate walks in on the children talking about her and becomes convinced that she sees Quint's ghost in the mirror, insisting that Flora saw him too despite her protests. When Kate accidentally breaks Flora's doll, Miles takes her away from Kate and smirks at her, calling her delusional. Kate later walks into her mother's mental institution and approaches a figure that appears to be her mother; as the figure turns around Kate screams in horror. The face of the figure is not revealed. Cast [ edit] Mackenzie Davis as Kate Mandell Finn Wolfhard as Miles Fairchild Brooklynn Prince as Flora Fairchild Joely Richardson as Darla Mandell [8] Barbara Marten as Mrs. Grose Mark Huberman as Bert Niall Greig Fulton as Peter Quint Denna Thomsen as Miss Jessel Kim Adis as Rose Karen Egan as Nancy Darlene Garr as Holly Production [ edit] Development [ edit] The film first entered development in March 2016 and was described as a passion project for Steven Spielberg, who executive produced, as he wanted to be involved in a horror film again. [9] The film adaptation went through two phases of production: first as Haunted with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo attached as director, then renamed as The Turning with Floria Sigismondi. [10] [11] Fresnadillo project (2016) [ edit] On March 9, 2016, Deadline Hollywood reported that Amblin Entertainment was hiring Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to direct Haunted, which was inspired by Henry James ' 1898 gothic ghost story, The Turn of the Screw and would be scripted by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes, and with Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, John Middleton and Scott Bernstein as the producers. [10] Haunted, which was to shoot under the DreamWorks label, would have been one of the first new projects to move forward since DreamWorks, Amblin and Participant Media formed the new Amblin Partners in late 2015, and DreamWorks, after distributing its films through Disney 's Touchstone Pictures since 2008, struck a new distribution deal with Universal. [10] On August 1, 2016, it was announced that Alfre Woodard had signed on to the project. [12] Later that month, Rose Leslie joined the project as the lead. [13] On September 21, 2016, five weeks before shooting, Spielberg personally pulled the plug on the project [10] because Scott Z. Burns ' 1-page rewrite caused seismic changes in the story's fabric (altering characters, action, even the title) and it no longer resembled the project the studio signed on to make. [10] Spielberg and DreamWorks decided the best course of action was to fire Fresnadillo and Burns and go back to the original Hayes' script and looking to start fresh development with a new director despite $5 million having been spent of the $17 million budget. [10] Sigismondi project (2017 onward) [ edit] On August 24, 2017, Deadline reported that Amblin Entertainment had set Floria Sigismondi to direct Haunted, now renamed as The Turning, [11] which would feature a new draft by Jade Bartlett based on the original script by Chad and Carey W. Hayes. Production was expected to start in early 2018 with Scott Bernstein and Roy Lee still attached as producers. [14] In October 2017, Mackenzie Davis signed on to portray the lead role of the nanny. [15] In December 2017, it was announced that Finn Wolfhard was cast as one of the orphans. [16] In January 2018, Brooklynn Prince joined the cast. [17] In February 2018, the rest of the cast was announced as principal production commenced. [6] The casting of Joely Richardson was announced in January 2019. [18] Filming [ edit] Principal production began in Ireland on February 14, 2018. [6] Filming began with the cast and crew behind strict security at Killruddery House in County Wicklow Filming for Wolfhard and Prince concluded on March 27, 2018. [19] [20] Principal photography for the film completed on April 6, 2018. [21] Music [ edit] The film's score is composed by American composer Nathan Barr. [22] The film's soundtrack will feature tracks from names like Pale Waves, Mitski, girl in red, Kali Uchis, Vagabon, Courtney Love, Warpaint, Alice Glass, The Aubreys, Lawrence Rothman and Soccer Mommy. [23] Release [ edit] The film was originally scheduled to be released on February 22, 2019, by Universal Pictures. [24] In September 2018, the film was removed from Universal's release schedule, with DreamWorks Animation 's How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World being released in its place. [25] It was released on January 24, 2020 with Universal releasing the film wide domestically and in select international territories. [26] Marketing [ edit] The first trailer was released on October 9, 2019. Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside The Gentlemen, and was projected to gross $7–9 million from 3, 000 theaters in its opening weekend. [27] The film made $2. 5 million on its first day, including $425, 000 from Thursday night previews. It went on to debut to $7. 3 million, finishing sixth at the box office. [28] Critical response [ edit] On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 12% based on 82 reviews, with an average rating of 3. 7/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "Stylish but muddled, this misbegotten adaptation of Henry James' classic novel will send horror-hungry viewers Turning to the source material instead. " [29] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 36 out of 100, based on 23 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". [30] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film a rare average grade of "F" on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak reported an overall positive score of 34% (including an average 0 out of 5 stars), with 20% of people saying they would definitely recommend it. The Turning is a 2020 American supernatural horror film and a modern adaptation of the 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw. Steven Spielberg serves as an executive producer, and it stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, and Brooklynn Prince. As in the original novel, the plot focuses on a nanny (Davis) charged with taking care of two disturbed orphans, Miles and Flora (Wolfhard and Prince). Soon, however, she finds that not everything is as it appears to be and that there may be dark forces at work within the mansion they live in... Previews: Official Trailer This film provides examples of the following tropes: The '90s: The plot is presumably set in 1994, especially given the fact that the opening scene features a news report about Kurt Cobain 's suicide. Adult Fear: Kate has to deal with a mysterious supernatural entity coming after her charges. All Just a Dream: The climax turns out to be a delusion of Kate's. Ambiguous Situation: How much of the haunting was real, and how much of it was Kate being delusional and paranoid? Cheerful Child: Flora is fairly cheerful, which makes some of the things she says even more disturbing. Creepy Child: Miles and Flora, naturally. Gainax Ending: The film literally presents us with two different endings based on whether the ghosts are real or Kate has just lost her mind. We're basically left to just choose which one we prefer. Mercy Kill: Miles performs this on a partly-eaten (but still alive) fish by crushing its head, reasoning that "nothing should have to suffer". Named by the Adaptation: The governess/nanny went unnamed in the original story; here, her name is Kate Mandell. Spared by the Adaptation: Miles survives to the end here, unlike the original story. Spiders Are Scary: Miles pukes up a spider in one scene.

Not at all. Australian filmmakers can create beautiful films because the outback and bush is so colourful already. Tim Winton's stories definitely create that atmosphere.

Miles returns home, where he quickly proceeds to test, torment, and even make inappropriate comments and advances toward Kate. Soon, Kate starts to think she's seeing and hearing ghosts with violent intentions and that Miles is possibly possessed -- even though the family's stern, snobbish housekeeper defends the children at all costs. Is it any good? Despite the talented cast and atmospheric production design, this adaptation suffers from both a sluggish plot and an unnecessarily abrupt ending. Davis, Prince, and Wolfhard are all fine actors, but there's little for them to do except act terrified, indulged, and smug, respectively. If ever there was a competition for rich kids behaving badly, Wolfhard's Miles (whom the housekeeper calls a "thoroughbred") would definitely place. He's indignant at the thought of clearing his plate, apathetic about his expulsion from school, and uninterested in following any rules "the help" might suggest. Kate, meanwhile, is the ultimate misguided do-gooder, and audiences may well take perverse delight in yelling at her throughout The Turning. Why Kate stays at the haunted manse with ungrateful children (Flora can be sweet, but she cares far more about her brother than her teacher) is beyond understanding. The only reasonable character in the movie is Kate's former roommate/best friend, Rose (Kim Adis), who routinely implores Kate to ditch the gig and come home. Rose is also the sole source of levity in the movie, because Kate is utterly humorless. Of course, Kate also isn't in her right mind: She's seeing ghosts and is overly invested in the children's lives. The movie's ambiguous final sequence will frustrate audiences because it's so incomprehensible -- and not in a thought-provoking Inception or The Others manner, but in a "what did we just watch? " or "why did we waste our money? " way. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about what makes for a good horror film. What elements does The Turning have that make it horror? Is the violence necessary to tell the story? Why do you think big estates are often featured in horror films? What makes them so easy to be frightened of -- and in? Why do you think this adaptation is set in the 1990s? How can you tell it's that decade, and why do you think the filmmaker set the remake then?
